The Magaliesburg Express is a train journey powered by a steam engine, it takes you back in time through the streets of Johannesburg to the Magaliesburg Mountains which are located about an hour’s drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria.
I would recommend this trip for the whole family or a group of friends. The train ride starts from Johannesburg Park Station, usually, if there are no hiccups leaves the station from Platform 14 at 9.00am, where you will be met by friendly Reefsteamers volunteers who help with all the activities throughout the journey. It is best and recommended to bring a picnic basket or some snacks for the three-hour journey, but there is also a kiosk on the train where tea coffee and are served as well a choice of snacks.
There is only one stop during the journey and that at the Krugersdorp station there is a brief opportunity to get off the train and wander around.
Once the train gets to Magaliesburg most passengers are taken to a nearby picnic spot called Magalies Sleepy River by busses, payment for the bus is made on the train or before the train departs at Park Stations. There are also a few other places that passengers can also go to near the station arrangements are made prior to the journey. After lunch passengers are then taken back to the station in time to leave at 3.00 and head back to Johannesburg and be back around 6:00 pm.
The cost for the ride is R250 with an extra cost of R60 for entrance to Magalies Sleepy River further information for dates for upcoming rides is available on their website.
