Are you a lover of beer or maybe just someone who loves to explore, learn new things about a city or in this case beer. South African Breweries (SAB) World of Beer is a museum of all things beer. Visiting the World of Beer is one the top things to do while visiting Johannesburg. I had the privilege to join one of their tours recently, when we arrived for the tour there were only two us (my sister and I ) waiting, but a few minutes before we were due to start, a large group joined us.
After a warm welcome a tour guide took us through to the Introductory section where Mr. Charles Glass introduced himself on the over head screens and gave a brief history of how Castle Breweries was founded in 1888 the main brand at the time was Castle Lager the company has grown and is the largest distributor of beer in South Africa. After the Introduction from Mr. Glass, we went through a maze of artifacts showing the history of beer brewing in the world and in Africa.
The Story of traditional beer in South Africa popularly known as Ümqombothi” is then told while sitting around a Boma. On a woman tells her story of how she makes her famous beer. After her story everyone was invited to take a sip of the beer from a “ukhamba”
The Maze continued on with more information and artifact that included Charles Glass in office and a make shift mine.
The next stop was at the African Lion Bar we tasted a beer on tap, which since our group was a large group the atmosphere in the tavern was quite electric but brief.
It is apparent that in the South African Beer History Shebeens were quite popular in the Townships. Did you know that Shebeen is an Irish term meaning – an unlicensed place where liquor was sold.
The last part of the tour shows the process of the brewing of the beer which starts in Greenfields Greenhouse where on display is the Barley and Hops which are the main ingredients used in the process brewing the third is water. It is interesting to note that the hops grows up to 10cm in length daily. The tour ends with more information how the beer is finally produced.
After the Tour, there is an option to join the beer tasting part of the tour. Since we were not taking part in the Beer Tasting we ended the tour by having lunch on the Tap Room Terrace.
